When many people hear the words “Maui vacation deals”, they tend to think of resplendent beaches and tropical drinks. What they don’t realize is that Maui is much more than sun tan lines, surfing, pineapples and hula dancers. It is also home to paniolo, Hawaii’s cowboys.
Visitors that want to catch a glimpse of paniolo life would do well to head towards Makawao for the day. Situated in the island’s upcountry region, it is home to the Piiholo Ranch. The ranch staff hosts two hour horseback riding excursions throughout the year. The twice daily, morning tours offer riders access to spectacular views and light refreshments.
Depending on the time of year, there may be a rodeo underway at the Oskie Rice Arena or one of the area’s other ranches too. The rodeos are often free to spectators and include a day’s worth of excitement. Activities that normally take place at the events are barrel racing, pole bending, roping, bull riding, bronc riding and break-away.
After horseback riding and watching professional paniolo, visitors may also opt to enjoy an afternoon or evening repast at one of the area’s restaurants. Those with a hankering for expertly prepared steaks should head towards the Makawao Steak House. They serve a 14 ounce, alaea salt crusted, slow roasted, certified Angus prime rib that’s to die for. The juicy, melt-in-your-mouth steak comes with horseradish, au jus, beans and bread.
Of course horseback riding, rodeos and steak houses are not all that’s on offer in Makawao. The town is home to great shops, art galleries andFriday parties that are open to the public. Some of the shops, like the Aloha Cowboy, specialize in western wear. So visitors can outfit themselves with paniolo apparel before heading back to our Maui condos.
Once back at our Maui condos, visitors may enjoy a multitude of relaxing activities. Among them are swims in our heated pool, dips in the Jacuzzi or sipping cocktails while overlooking the ocean.
