Every condo at Maui Kai faces the ocean from a private lanai, the Hawaiian word for a covered balcony, over the water at Kaanapali Beach. There are no street-side rooms and no view tiers, so the choice comes down to who is coming and for how long. Four types, from the smallest to the largest.
Junior Suite Oceanfront: for a couple, a honeymoon or a solo stay
A junior suite is a studio of about 500 square feet with a full kitchen, a bathroom and the same oceanfront lanai as every other condo in the building. Queen bed in most, king in some. It carries the lowest nightly rate of the four types and is the type most often available at Best Rate.
Is a junior suite enough for a honeymoon?
Yes. The lanai is the room you will use most, and it is the same lanai the larger condos have. What you give up is a separate bedroom and a dining table, not the view. Couples staying a week or more tend to choose a one bedroom instead.
Can a junior suite sleep three?
A few of the seventeen can, and each unit page states its capacity. Most sleep two.
Which condo works for one person, or a week of remote work?
A junior suite. Every condo has its own Wi-Fi network and a full kitchen, and the cabana has a guest computer and printer.
The lanai right on the water is incredible. We love listening to the sound of the waves.

One Bedroom Oceanfront: for a couple who wants a door, or a family with one or two children
A one bedroom is about 800 square feet with a separate bedroom, a full kitchen, a dining area, a living room with a sofa sleeper and a private oceanfront lanai. King or queen bed. Sleeps four. Two are in the program, so book ahead for holidays and whale season.
Which Kaanapali condo works for a family with children during school breaks?
A one bedroom, if you are two adults with one or two children: parents in the bedroom, children on the sofa sleeper with the door closed between them, the kitchen handling breakfast before the beach and the lanai handling dinner after it. Capacity is four, adults and children alike. For four to six people, or children old enough to want their own room, see the two bedroom below.
Is a one bedroom worth it for a couple staying a week or more?
Most couples staying a week or longer say yes. A dining table and a bedroom door matter more on day six than on day one.
Our whole family was very happy with the experience, and we would absolutely love to stay here again in the future.

One Bedroom Oceanfront Corner: the one bedroom with ocean on two sides
The corner is the one bedroom layout on a corner of the building, with the same rooms and the same oceanfront lanai, plus a floor-to-ceiling window on the side wall of the living room that looks along the shoreline, north or south depending on the corner. Sleeps four, at a slightly higher rate than the standard one bedroom. Five are in the program, some with an open lanai and some glass-enclosed.
What is the difference between a one bedroom and a corner one bedroom?
The side window. Ocean straight ahead through the lanai, beach to the side through the window, and a cross-breeze when both are open. Everything else, including the guests it suits, is the same.
Which is better for a couple staying longer?
The corner, if the rate difference does not matter to you; the second view is what you notice on a slow morning. If it does, the standard one bedroom gives up nothing but the window.
The views are incredible especially having both a front and side ocean view.

Two Bedroom Oceanfront: for two couples, a family of four to six, or three generations
The two bedroom is the largest condo in the building at about 1,100 square feet: two bedrooms, two full bathrooms, a full kitchen, a living room with a sofa sleeper and a wraparound lanai at ground level, a few steps from the seawall. King with a private bath in the main bedroom, queen in the second. Sleeps six. One in the program, through Pick a Condo only; it books out early for the holidays and whale season.
Where can two couples stay with private bedrooms and a shared living room?
Here. Each couple gets a bedroom and a bathroom of their own; the living room, kitchen and lanai are shared. It is the only condo at Maui Kai with two bedrooms and two baths.
Which condo works with a toddler?
The two bedroom. Ground floor means no elevator, no stairs and a few steps between the lanai and the sand. Debanjana B., who stayed with children: “The best part of this house/unit is that the beach is just 2 steps away. Kids had lot of fun.”

Is the two bedroom a suite or a villa?
No. It is a condo: a two bedroom, two bath unit at ground level in an oceanfront building, individually owned. Guests searching for a two bedroom suite or villa on Kaanapali Beach usually mean this kind of layout without a hotel around it.
We had another 1-bedroom unit on level 3, and there were a total of 7 of us. More than comfortable between the 2 units.

What is a lanai?
Lanai is the Hawaiian word for a covered balcony or veranda. At Maui Kai every condo has a private one facing the ocean, where guests eat breakfast, watch the sunset and, from December to April, watch for whales. They are elevated balconies on floors one through ten, open or glass-enclosed depending on the condo, not the ground-level screened lanais common in Florida.
Do all condos have an oceanfront lanai?
Yes, every one, over the water, and each unit page states whether it is open, screened or glass-enclosed. Every condo also has a full kitchen, central air conditioning, its own Wi-Fi network, beach towels, the first pot of coffee and free parking, with no resort fee and no booking fee.
Every condo is different, so look before you book
The four types tell you the shape: how many bedrooms, how many it sleeps, where the lanai sits. They do not tell you which floor you are on, whether that lanai is open or glass-enclosed, or how the owner has furnished it, and those vary from condo to condo. Every unit page carries its own photos, its own bed and lanai details, and what previous guests said about it.
