Ka’anapali Beach Resort Offers Winter Whale Watching Getaways

December 2, 2013 by Maui Kai Leave a Comment

Do you dread the thought of spending yet another winter vacation standing in long lines at a ski resort? If that’s the case, why not trade the ski poles in for a chance to watch humpback whales off the coast of Maui? December through April is the best time to see them. In addition, you may be able to take advantage of one of our Ka’anapali Beach resort’s winter specials.

Spend the night in one of our oceanfront units and wake feeling fully refreshed. Once you are awake, enjoy a filling breakfast. Then don a pair of deck shoes, a light windbreaker and non-aerosol sun screen before heading on down to Ka’anapali Beach. From there, board a catamaran staffed with knowledgeable naturalists and sail out to meet the whales. Most whale watching tours last approximately 2 hours. So you should be back on shore in time for lunch.

If the morning whale watch has you longing for more, consider making tracks to Whalers Village Museum in Lahaina. They typically host free humpback whale talks on select days of the week. The talks are given by NOAA volunteers. While there, you could also spend time scanning the Au au Channel for a glimpse of more whales or marveling at the museum’s exhibits. They include vast amounts of scrimshaw, sailor’s journals, seafaring equipment and a scale model of an ancient whaling vessel.

Afterward, you may want to partake of a submarine tour. Traditionally departing from the area, it will take you underneath the waves and towards the final resting place of the Carthaginian. Over the years, the sunken wreck has become the home of many interesting creatures. Each submarine tour tends to last about 105 minutes. When you resurface, be sure to enjoy a beachfront meal al fresco. Two great places to consider dining are Leilani’s On the Beach and the Hula Grill. The Hula Grill sometimes offers access to live entertainment.
