Why September and October are worth the trip
Early fall is when the island exhales. The summer families head home after Labor Day, and the beach in front of Maui Kai gets noticeably quieter. The ocean, meanwhile, is at its warmest of the entire year, right around 80 degrees, which makes for long, easy snorkel sessions on the reef below the building.
Trade winds settle, evenings stay warm, and sunsets start arriving early enough to catch from the lanai before dinner. By late October, the first humpbacks of the season are sometimes spotted offshore, a preview of the winter show.
September adds the Aloha Festivals across the island, and by October the snorkel boats and surf breaks feel half empty. It is the season regulars book on purpose and first-timers discover by accident.

The parking alone deserves a sentence. Public beach stalls in Kaanapali number a couple hundred for a three-mile beach and are gone before 8 AM, while Maui Kai guests register a license plate at the front desk once and keep the car steps from the elevator for the whole stay.
